If you haven’t heard of Campeche before its okay, not many Americans have. Campeche is located in the southeast of Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula, surrounded by the pristine blue waters of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Blending Spanish influences with the rich history and culture of the Mayan people Campeche gives visitors an intriguing look at colonial Mexico architecture and ancient Mayan ruins.
Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999, Campeche was first colonized in 1517 by Captain Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, a Spanish Conquistador. In 1540 it was founded as the first Spanish settlement in the Yucatan Peninsula. Today Campeche still retains many of the old colonial Spanish city walls and forts built in the 1600s to protect the city from European and Caribbean pirates.
A visit to Campeche will give young and old alike a glimpse of what life was like in the time of pirates. As you walk the streets of Campeche’s Centro you may feel as you have stepped back in time.
Campechanos work hard to preserve their city’s original architecture, rich history and culture. Their accommodating hospitality and friendliness toward visitors will make your Campeche Adventure Tour experience even more enjoyable and memorable.
